Fresh Landslide Threat in Previously Affected Areas: NBRO Issues Warning

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has warned that areas affected by landslides during the recent Titwa storm remain vulnerable to fresh landslides. The public has been urged to remain vigilant.

Senior Engineer Vasantha Senadheera of the NBRO said that, in view of the prevailing adverse weather conditions, a Level Three Red Alert has been issued for the Kandy, Kegalle and Nuwara Eliya Districts, while a Level Two Amber Alert has been issued for the Ratnapura District.

He made these remarks at a media briefing held at the Department of Government Information on August 3, 2026.

He further stated that persistent heavy rainfall has increased the risk of landslides across the Central Highlands. Accordingly, red alerts have been issued for Kandy, Kegalle and Nuwara Eliya.

The warnings have been issued based on the rainfall recorded over the previous day, and may be revised depending on rainfall levels recorded in the coming days.

Several main roads have been temporarily closed following earth slips. On the Kandy-Navalapitiya main road, one person lost his life after an illegally constructed roadside shop was buried under a collapsing earth embankment. Numerous incidents of earth slips have also been reported from several other areas.

The NBRO reiterated that regions affected by landslides during the Titwa storm remain at risk of further landslides and urged the public to remain alert.

People have also been requested not to ignore official safety advisories issued by the authorities.
