Former Critics Now Advancing Chinese-Funded Development Projects – Sagara Kariyawasam
25-Dec-2025.
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam stated that it is encouraging to see those who once criticized major development projects supported by China now advancing them and recognizing their value.
He noted that Sri Lanka–China relations strengthened from the 1951 Rubber–Rice Pact and became particularly strong during the presidency of Mahinda Rajapaksa, when major development projects including the Port City were initiated.
He said China played a vital role in rebuilding Sri Lanka after the end of the 30-year conflict, despite criticism at the time, and emphasized the importance of China’s five-year development plan for achieving high economic growth, which is also relevant to Sri Lanka’s future.
