Final Decision on Next Steps with IMF to Be Taken After March
14-Oct-2026.
The Government has announced that a final decision on its future engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will be taken only after the current programme concludes in March, taking into account the country’s economic situation.
Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa made the announcement at the weekly press conference on Cabinet decisions held at the Government Information Department in Colombo on October 13, 2026.
Elaborating on the matter, he said the Extended Fund Facility programme currently being implemented with the IMF was due to conclude in March.
The Government was conducting detailed discussions and assessments on the next steps and programmes to be pursued after the completion of the current arrangement.
Several important discussions and exchanges of views were also under way in this regard, in line with the economic objectives and policy plans of the National People’s Power (NPP), he said.
A final decision on Sri Lanka’s future relationship with the IMF would be taken only after the current programme concludes in March, based on the country’s prevailing economic stability, the challenges faced by the people and the Government’s own economic objectives, he added.
