A bilateral discussion was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on expanding employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in the Republic of Cyprus and improving welfare schemes for returnee workers.

The talks took place between Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and the High Commissioner of Cyprus to Sri Lanka, Evagoras Vryonides.

The High Commissioner noted a strong demand for Sri Lankan workers in Cyprus, particularly in nursing, tourism, agriculture, construction, and maritime sectors. The Minister assured that steps would be taken to expedite agreements between the two countries to facilitate such employment opportunities.

The Minister also raised concerns regarding unresolved social security benefits for Sri Lankan workers above the age of 65 who have returned from Cyprus. The High Commissioner assured that efforts would be made to address the issue promptly and extended an invitation for an official visit to Cyprus.
