Executive Presidential System Strengthened; Harshana Rajakaruna
07-Oct-2025.
Harshana Rajakaruna, UPP Member of Parliament, stated that although the current government claims to abolish the executive presidential system and create a new constitution, it is actually taking steps to strengthen the system.
Speaking to the media after a public meeting in Kambahawa on October 6, he said that the government had criticized former President Ranil Wickremesinghe for spending millions on indulgences, yet President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is spending even more.
Despite claiming to abolish the executive presidency, the government is fully exploiting its powers while ignoring promises made to the people.
He added that retirees should be provided with certain benefits, but past abuses of these privileges have been observed.
The government must ensure that any measures are not driven by political vendettas, particularly concerning the security of former Presidents. However, the government is proceeding with all actions purely for political retribution.
He highlighted that, with government approval, 323 containers were released from the port without inspection, two of which recently contained large quantities of drugs.
Despite warnings from international agencies about drugs in these containers, the government ignored the warnings and authorized release without checks.
This clearly shows complicity from the state, and the government must take immediate and appropriate action, disregarding political affiliations.
