An environment has now been created in which the Police can function independently without yielding to political pressure. Police officers must serve the public with dedication. If any officer engages in unlawful activities, stern action will be taken, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya stated.

He made these remarks while addressing an event held under the theme of the Provincial Council system at the Kalutara Police College.

He further stated that despite the economic difficulties faced by the country, it has been decided to recruit new personnel to fill vacancies in the Police service. Attention has also been given to resolving salary anomalies affecting Police officers.

He noted that the professional integrity of Police officers could be damaged due to five key factors: involvement in bribery and corruption, drug addiction, misconduct, addiction to mobile phone usage, and involvement in online fraud.

Reiterating his earlier statement, the IGP said that an environment has now been established for Police officers to function independently without giving in to political pressure. He emphasised that Police officers must work with commitment towards the people, and warned that strict action would be taken against those who engage in illegal conduct.

He further said that several Police officers who acted unlawfully have recently been dismissed from service. Therefore, officers must act responsibly at all times. If they act irresponsibly, disciplinary action will be taken at the institutional level, and legal action will also follow, he added.
