Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath will travel to Thailand on September 14 to sign a bilateral Memorandum of Understanding aimed at providing new employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in Thailand.

Following discussions between Sri Lanka and Thailand aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation on labour migration, agreement has been reached to sign an MoU on professional cooperation and an agreement relating to the employment of Sri Lankan workers in Thailand.

The Cabinet has approved a proposal submitted by Minister Vijitha Herath to sign the agreements, which have been prepared to remain in force for a period of five years.

Once the agreements come into effect, they are expected to establish strong official links and cooperation between the relevant authorities in the labour sectors of the two countries.

They will also provide a structured mechanism to ensure that the recruitment and deployment of Sri Lankan workers to Thailand, as well as their repatriation, are carried out transparently and efficiently.

The agreements are also expected to ensure the legal rights, welfare and safety of Sri Lankan workers employed in Thailand, while facilitating measures to prevent irregular recruitment practices by employment agencies and illegal human trafficking.
