Tamil National People’s Front MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam stated that the Emergency Regulations are being used to suppress growing public opposition to the government rather than to provide disaster relief.

Speaking during the emergency law debate, he said the party would vote against the extension. He argued that disaster relief can be carried out without emergency powers and criticized the government for failing to address issues such as Indian trawlers damaging local fishermen’s livelihoods.

He also called for respect for cultural sensitivities and the return of lands used by the military.
