Election Commission proposes 25% quota for women in Provincial Council polls

The Election Commission has proposed reserving 25 per cent of seats for women under the Provincial Council electoral system.

The proposal was presented to the Parliamentary Select Committee examining electoral reforms. The committee has sought a detailed explanation of the new model and will meet again on July 21 to continue discussions.

Representatives of the Election Commission and the Women Parliamentarians' Caucus attended the meeting. While the caucus reiterated its demand for a 33 per cent quota for women, the Commission presented an alternative proposal for a 25 per cent reservation and said implementation details would be submitted at the next meeting.
