Court Seeks Affidavit on Sajin Vaas Gunawardena’s Travel Ban Relaxation Request
20-Jun-2026.
The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has directed former MP Sajin Vaas Gunawardena to submit an affidavit in support of his request for a temporary relaxation of the overseas travel ban imposed on him.
The order was issued when a motion filed by Gunawardena, who is a suspect in a corruption case, was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama on June 19.
His counsel informed the court that Gunawardena needed to travel abroad for personal reasons and requested a temporary lifting of the travel restriction. After reviewing the documents, the Magistrate noted that the affidavit submitted had been prepared for proceedings in a higher court and directed the filing of a separate affidavit relevant to the Magistrate’s Court proceedings.
The defence informed the court that the request would be supported on a future date with proper documentation and after notifying CIABOC.
Gunawardena is facing legal proceedings over allegations that he acquired assets worth Rs. 243.8 million through unlawful means during his tenure as a Member of Parliament.
