President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced that the current government is committed to identifying economic opportunities, expanding the economy, and developing the nation in a well-planned manner, with a focus on lifting rural communities out of poverty.

He made these remarks on September 2, at the inauguration of construction works for the Vattuvakal Bridge in Mullaitivu district.

The President added that several new development projects are scheduled to commence nationwide in September. Unlike past traditions of delays and overspending, this government is committed to completing projects on time and within budget, ensuring direct benefits to the people.

Located on the Paranthan-Karachchi-Mullaitivu road near the Nanthikadal lagoon, the Vattuvakal Bridge carries over 3,000 vehicles daily. Due to long neglect, the structure had become unsafe. It is now being redeveloped as a two-lane bridge under the Road Development Authority, with an allocation of Rs. 1.4 billion, to be completed by September 2, 2027.

Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Bimal Ratnayake, noted that although initially estimated at Rs. 1.8 billion, the project was reduced to Rs. 1.4 billion under the current government’s corruption-free administration.

The saved Rs. 400 million will be used for road improvements in the Vanni district. He added that Rs. 12.5 billion has already been allocated this year for bridges and roads in the North, with more funding expected next year.

He stressed that the government is equally committed to national development and to ensuring the unity and progress of the North.
