Bill to Abolish MPs’ Pensions Tabled in Parliament
09-Jan-2026.
A bill seeking to abolish pensions for Members of Parliament was presented to Parliament for its First Reading by Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara.
The bill was tabled when Parliament convened under the Speaker’s chairmanship on Jan 7.
The proposed legislation aims to repeal the Parliamentary Pensions Act No. 1 of 1977 of the National State Assembly. The draft bill was published in the Gazette last week under the authority of the Minister of Justice and National Integration.
The Gazette notification further clarifies that any individual receiving a parliamentary pension under the provisions of the 1977 Act, the 1982 Act No. 1, or the 1990 Act No. 47 will cease to receive such pension from the date the new law comes into effect.
