The Matara Magistrate has ordered the arrest warrant issued against Basil Rajapaksa in connection with the alleged irregular acquisition of land in Matara to be extended until October 27, 2026.
The case filed against former Minister Basil Rajapaksa, alleging that he purchased a one-and-a-half-acre plot of land on Eliyakanda Road, Browns Hill, Matara, using money obtained through unlawful means, was taken up for hearing August 19 before Matara Chief Magistrate Chathurya Dissanayake.
The Magistrate ordered the forfeiture of the bail money deposited by Basil Rajapaksa, the third suspect in the case filed by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division, as he had repeatedly failed to appear for the proceedings and had not submitted a medical certificate acceptable to the court.
The Magistrate also imposed fines on the three individuals who had signed bail on behalf of Basil Rajapaksa and ordered that they be imprisoned if they failed to pay the fines.
The Magistrate further ordered that the arrest warrant issued against Basil Rajapaksa be extended until October 27, 2026.
