Amendment to the Sri Lanka Press Council Law

The Cabinet has granted approval to amend the Sri Lanka Press Council Law No. 5 of 1973.
The Press Council Law No. 5 of 1973 has not been updated in line with contemporary social and cultural trends.
With the advancement of modern communication technology, in addition to newspapers and radio, television, websites, and social media platforms have rapidly expanded among the public, exerting significant influence on people’s lives.
Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the proposal submitted by the Minister of Health and Mass Media to amend the Sri Lanka Press Council Law No. 5 of 1973 to include provisions relating to the following key areas: when a press report is broadcast via any electronic medium, during inquiries conducted by the Press Council into such reports, the remedies or settlement orders determined as a result of such inquiries, the registration of electronic newspapers or magazines published online or in print form, and the investigation of complaints relating to such publications.
