272,536 Displaced by Disaster: International Organization for Migration

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 272,536 people have been displaced nationwide following the disaster caused by Cyclone Ditwah.

Hundreds have died, while millions have been affected, losing homes and livelihoods. Approximately 1.8 million people have been impacted, with many forced into temporary shelters.

According to IOM data collected between Dec 17 and 19, the number of affected individuals stands at 1,788,572, marking a 3 percent increase compared to Dec 12.

Of those displaced, 19 percent are housed in shelters, while 81 percent are staying with relatives or in community accommodations. Currently, 723 shelters are operational, and 107,283 houses have been partially or fully damaged.

Authorities are exploring resettlement options in districts including Gampaha, Matara, Kegalle, and Vavuniya, along with providing land ownership for housing reconstruction.
