15,000 landslide-risk locations identified nationwide
12-Dec-2025.
The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has stated that around 15,000 landslide-prone locations have been identified nationwide, and that approximately 5,000 families residing in these areas have already been relocated to safer locations.
However, the NBRO added that people continue to reside in most of the landslide-risk zones, and urged that they must immediately move to safer areas.
Incidents related to landslides are reported to the NBRO through Grama Niladharis, then to Divisional Secretaries, and finally reach the District Secretary. Investigations are then carried out accordingly.
The NBRO further stated that until inspections are completed and the current risk level is officially assessed, it is best that residents do not remain in those areas.
