12,650 Online Fraud Complaints Recorded in 2025: Sri Lanka CERT
03-Jan-2026.
Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) has received over 12,650 complaints related to cyber fraud in 2025 alone, according to Chief Information Security Engineer Charuka Damunupola.
Speaking to the media on 1 January, he stated that cybercrime complaints have increased significantly compared to previous years. The majority involved fake social media accounts, account hacking, and financial fraud.
Complaints were also received regarding hate speech and incitement to violence through social media, defamatory and obscene content, and online sexual harassment targeting adults. He noted that cybercriminals are increasingly using sophisticated methods to deceive the public.
Fraudsters trick victims into revealing bank details, one-time passwords, PIN numbers, and QR codes, leading to financial losses. Individuals with limited awareness of cybersecurity practices, including youth, senior citizens, and first-time internet users, are particularly vulnerable.
The public was urged to avoid sharing personal, financial, or banking information with unknown third parties, and to use strong passwords and two-factor authentication for social media accounts.
Victims of cybercrime or those who identify suspicious activities are advised to contact the emergency hotline 101 or email report@cert.gov.lk.
