Russia is ready to cooperate with Sri Lanka in nuclear energy development but will not impose any decisions that infringe on the country’s sovereignty, said Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Levan Dzhagaryan.

Responding to media questions about nuclear power plants in Sri Lanka, he said that Russia is prepared to support Sri Lanka in developing nuclear power. He confirmed that discussions are planned with Sri Lanka’s Energy Minister.

Previous governments had already proposed nuclear projects, including three power plants of 900 MW each. More recently, Sri Lanka considered a small-scale nuclear plant with two units of 55 MW (total 110 MW), expandable to six units depending on demand.

The ambassador emphasized: “As I always say, the ball is in your court—it depends on Sri Lanka’s own decision-making.”

Commenting on the Russia-Ukraine war, he said Russia appreciates Sri Lanka’s neutral stance despite Western pressure, adding that no power will be able to defeat Russia.
