Vijay's party functionary arrested after Karur rally stampede claimed 41 lives

Tamil Nadu Police on September 29 arrested Mathiazhagan, the district secretary of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’s (TVK), in connection with the stampede that occurred at the rally addressed by actor Vijay on September 27 night that claimed 41 lives and injured 60 others.

Mathiazhagan has been named as the prime accused in the First Information Report (FIR) registered following the incident. 

The rally was organised by TVK, the political party launched by actor Vijay. Further details regarding the charges are awaited.

Although the FIR did not name the TVK chief Vijay, it named three party office-bearers: Mathiyalagan (Karur district secretary), Bussy N Anand (state general secretary) and CTR Nirmal Kumar (state joint secretary), and stated that Vijay conducted unauthorised roadshows before arriving at Velusamypuram, where his vehicle stopped amid a large crowd.
