India’s opposition to 22nd Amendment will also emerge soon: LSSP

The Lanka Sama Samaja Party does not believe that the 22nd Constitutional Amendment proposed by the Government is genuinely being pursued with good intentions, said Chandana Ranasinghe, a member of the party’s Political Bureau and Central Committee.

He alleged that India’s opposition to the proposed 22nd Amendment would also emerge soon. 

Commenting on the proposed amendment, he said it was another deceptive move similar to the 19th and 20th Constitutional Amendments introduced by previous governments.

He said this was why the Government was attempting to avoid holding a referendum to ascertain the will of the people.

Not only experts and academics in various fields in the country but also the international community had continuously expressed the view that such an amendment should not be introduced, he said.

He added that, contrary to the claims of the National People’s Power Government, the amendment would neither expedite the disposal of court cases nor provide any significant benefit to the people.

Against the backdrop of the current Chief Justice having already reached the end of his tenure several months earlier, the Government’s move clearly appeared to be a deliberate deception, he alleged.

He further claimed that there was no doubt that opposition to the amendment would soon emerge from India as well.

“We will wait and see what the Government will do when such a situation arises,” he said.
