30 Canadians, permanent residents, among missing in Nepal

Rescue teams are searching for hundreds of missing people along the Nepal-Tibet border after a catastrophic torrent of floods and mud ripped through several communities on August 27, following a glacier collapse.

At least 353 people are dead and more than 1,300 others are missing. That includes 30 Canadians and permanent residents, Global Affairs Canada said. The affected area is popular with hikers and is also a route used by those on pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in neighbouring Tibet, a sacred site to several religious traditions.

The vast majority of the dead and hundreds of the missing were in Nepal, with three dead and 558 missing in Tibet, authorities said.
