Three off-duty Toronto police officers have been charged by Spanish authorities while vacationing in Barcelona, Toronto Police Service has confirmed.

"The allegations are serious," Toronto police spokesperson Stephanie Sayer said in an email on May 18, without providing details about what is being alleged.

One of the officers has returned to Canada, and was suspended from duty with pay, Sayer said. The other two will also be suspended when they return home in the coming days, she added.

Toronto police are not identifying the officers and are unable to comment further on the charges as the matters are now before the court, Sayer said.

In an emailed statement, spokesperson Meaghan Gray said the Toronto Police Association is aware of the charges.

"Given these charges relate to an off-duty incident, the Toronto Police Association has no further comment," she said.
