At least 144 refugees and migrants died or went missing off Mauritania's coast during three maritime incidents linked to attempts to reach Europe.

The deadliest involved a Gambian boat drifting 25 days, found with 143 bodies and 38 survivors, including two bereaved children. Between July 14-18, 387 people were rescued. Despite fewer sea arrivals to Europe in 2026, mortality remains high.

UNHCR urges expanded education, jobs, and legal migration routes to prevent dangerous crossings and reduce fatalities.
