Former Minister Sarath Weerasekara of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has alleged that Deputy Inspector General of Police Dilipa Peiris is acting in a manner that undermines the entire Attorney General's Department. He further stated that legal action is being contemplated against all those responsible for the alleged torture of Suresh Sale.

He made these remarks while addressing the media following a special religious observance organised on June 6 at the Kelaniya Temple by a group including Sarath Weerasekara, seeking blessings for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Speaking further, Weerasekara said that Dilipa Peiris, despite serving as a Deputy Inspector General of Police, has been conducting himself in a manner that discredits the Attorney General's Department as a whole. He claimed that all actions taken against Suresh Sale are based solely on allegations made by Asad Maulana, who fled the country and sought asylum abroad, and whose statements were reportedly provided to Channel 4.

According to Weerasekara, the allegations made by Asad Maulana were conclusively disproved in the report of the Imam Commission of Inquiry appointed by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. He pointed out that during the period in question, Suresh Sale was in Malaysia and India and was not present in Sri Lanka.

He further stated that plans are underway to initiate legal proceedings against all those involved in detaining Sale for 180 days and allegedly subjecting him to torture in a confined six-by-four-foot cell based on what he described as false testimony.
