Development Projects in Mannar, Mullaitivu and Trincomalee

Development work at the Mannar District General Hospital and Mullaitivu District General Hospital, funded by the Government of India, was ceremonially commenced yesterday under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Similarly, development work at the Trincomalee District General Hospital and the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, funded by the Government of Japan, was also commenced.
During his visit to the Northern and Eastern Provinces on September 16, 2026, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake launched a development project to construct new stages of the general hospitals in the districts of Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Mullaitivu and Mannar at a total cost of Rs. 7,148 million.
Construction of the Accident and Emergency Treatment Unit at the Mannar District General Hospital commenced yesterday, Wednesday, under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The Accident and Emergency Treatment Unit, being constructed with a grant of Rs. 600 million from the Government of India, will be equipped with modern facilities and is expected to further expand healthcare services for the people of Mannar. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2028.
Upon completion of the project, people in Mannar will no longer need to travel to Colombo or other major cities to obtain emergency trauma care and other specialised healthcare services.
The Government has also taken steps to provide the Mannar District General Hospital with the medical equipment and personnel required to deliver these services.
At the foundation-laying ceremony, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake took the hand of the Governor of the Northern Province and invited him to lay the foundation stone. Subsequently, Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha, and Members of Parliament Selvam Adaikalanathan and Kader Masthan laid the foundation stone.
Following the commencement of construction work, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake engaged in a cordial discussion with the hospital staff.

Dr. Gnanapragasam Anthonipillai, Northern Province Governor Nagalingam Vethanayahan, Members of Parliament representing the Mannar District, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd.), Chiefs of the Defence Forces, officials of the Ministry of Health, officials of the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, Consul General of India in Jaffna Sai Murali and officials of the Consulate General of India in Jaffna, among others, participated in the event.
To further strengthen healthcare facilities for the people of Mullaitivu District, a new four-storey medical ward complex will be constructed at the Mullaitivu District General Hospital at a cost of Rs. 600 million with financial assistance from the Government of India.
Construction of a new Cardiology Unit building at the Trincomalee District General Hospital commenced yesterday morning under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, with the objective of providing comprehensive and modern cardiac care facilities to the people of the Eastern Province at a single location.
The project is being implemented at a cost of Rs. 2,403 million under a project to improve health and medical services, with financial assistance from the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project is aimed at strengthening facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
The eight-storey Cardiology Unit building will include state-of-the-art operating theatres, outpatient and inpatient treatment facilities and comprehensive laboratory facilities. Construction is scheduled to be completed by May 2028.
The President unveiled the commemorative plaque and participated in the ceremony marking the commencement of construction. He also engaged in a cordial discussion with the hospital staff.
