Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Isabelle Martin, has pledged Canada's full support for programmes aimed at eradicating rural poverty and empowering low-income families in Sri Lanka.

She gave this assurance during an official meeting with Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Dr. Upali Pannilage.

She also appreciated the emergency measures taken by the government to address the essential needs of the people amid the recent "Thidva" disaster and the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

Minister Pannilage briefed the High Commissioner on Sri Lanka's national poverty alleviation programme, "Praja Shakthi", and sought Canada's support for its successful implementation.

The High Commissioner assured assistance for the programme and held extensive discussions on strengthening social protection schemes for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

Canada also agreed to provide technical assistance for welfare programmes related to rural development and social security.

Officials from the Canadian High Commission and senior representatives of the Ministry, including Secretary Sampath Mandrinayake, attended the meeting.
