Atmospheric Disturbance May Develop Again over the Bay of Bengal
28-Oct-2026.
There is a possibility of another atmospheric disturbance developing over the Bay of Bengal around October 31. The situation is being closely monitored, and further forecasts may be issued in due course, said Sajith Wickramasuriya, a duty meteorologist at the Department of Meteorology.
He made these remarks while commenting on the developing weather situation.
He further stated that the prevailing El Niño conditions could contribute to the frequent development of such atmospheric disturbances.
However, the low-pressure system that formed in early October intensified into a storm similar to Cyclone Arnab. As a result, the waters of the Bay of Bengal have cooled to some extent, creating conditions that could hinder the formation of another system.
He also observed that there is a misconception among the public that the development of a cyclone or atmospheric disturbance in the Bay of Bengal will invariably bring heavy rain or strong winds to Sri Lanka.
However, the amount of rainfall depends on the direction of the winds around Sri Lanka. For instance, when winds reach Sri Lanka from across India, rainfall tends to be lower, while mist-like conditions can be observed during the morning hours.
