Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera, Chairman of the National Organisation for National Security, has sent a letter to the President requesting the removal of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya from the post of Minister of Education and calling for a cabinet reshuffle.

In the letter addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Thera stated that the unilateral education reforms proposed under the Prime Minister’s leadership confirm that the country, its people, and the Maha Sangha are facing a serious threat under the current government.

He further noted that such a weak government, which shows no concern for the people or the country, directly harms the nation and its citizens.

The Thera pointed out that there was a lack of transparency in the education reforms, as no opinions were sought from Buddhist monks, other religious leaders, teachers, or education experts.

He emphasised that the procedure followed in introducing these reforms was flawed from the outset and therefore lacks legitimacy.

Stating that he was fulfilling his historical responsibility as a Buddhist monk, Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera expressed his expectation that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, as the Head of State, would act swiftly to protect the country and safeguard the people and the Maha Sangha from this danger.
