Action has been taken to declare Veddikunari Hills in Vavuniya as a protected forest area. Religious markers in the region have been identified as belonging to Buddhism. Illegal constructions in the area have created multiple problems, and the Department of Archaeology has taken necessary legal measures. There are no restrictions on religious worship, and all communities have the right to access the site.

The 229-acre area near Kurundhur Hill has been proposed as an archaeological zone, as confirmed by Minister for South Buddhist Affairs and Religious Affairs, Sunil Senavi. During the Parliamentary session on April 8, in response to questions by TNA MP Sannikyan Rasamanickam under Standing Order 27/2, he emphasised that special attention has been given to resolving long-standing local issues arising from previous short-sighted decisions.

Senavi clarified that archaeology does not prioritise any particular religion and highlighted that Hindu, Muslim, and Catholic religious symbols are also recognised in heritage sites. The Thandamalai Temple area has not been formally designated as an archaeological site, and all interventions must comply with proper legal procedures to avoid misunderstandings.

The Kurundhur Lake outside the protected area is not subject to archaeological restrictions, and fishing activities are permitted. The government is responsible for protecting heritage for all communities without discrimination, ensuring legal and conflict-free management.
