A two-minute silence will be observed from 9:25 a.m. to 9:27 a.m. today (Dec 26)  to commemorate those who died in the tsunami disaster and other calamities. The main national event will be held at the Peraliya Tsunami Memorial in Galle.

The 2004 tsunami claimed over 35,000 lives in Sri Lanka, with more than 5,000 missing and billions worth of property destroyed. Since 2005, Dec 26 has been observed as National Safety Day.

Considering the current situation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, this year’s commemorations will be held at district level with religious observances. The public is urged to participate in the two-minute silence nationwide in remembrance of all disaster victims.
