Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna General Secretary Tilvin Silva stated that the truth regarding the Easter Sunday bomb attacks will be revealed very soon, and the public need not be anxious.

He made these remarks while addressing the 55th April Heroes’ Memorial event held in Vavuniya on April 5.

He stated that while proper investigations are being conducted into the Easter Sunday attacks, some individuals are publishing books questioning who the main masterminds are, and several alleged masterminds even attended those book launch events. He insisted that the truth will emerge soon.

Silva stated that their comrades sacrificed their lives for the people. During the 1970 period, he said, they engaged in democratic struggles for political rights, and their struggle was never against humanity, nor against any race or religion.

He alleged that the government in power at the time unleashed violence against their democratic struggle and forced it into an armed uprising. Those who died in that struggle, he said, made sacrifices for the country.

He said that after a long struggle they have now formed a government through democratic means. He criticised those who bankrupted the country for now speaking about economic development and stressed that strong action is needed to recover from the economic crisis.

He accused opposition parties responsible for the country’s bankruptcy of now uniting against the government while speaking as though they are free of corruption. He pointed out that the Supreme Court has clearly stated that corruption and fraud by one family led the country into bankruptcy, and yet those individuals continue to speak about corruption.

Silva said special attention must be given to current global developments. He stated that the government cannot control Middle East conflicts but must manage the resulting crisis. He said steps have already been taken to manage the fuel shortage.

He urged the public to act with collective responsibility during the global fuel shortage and warned that hoarding fuel and selling it at higher prices is entirely wrong. He added that if the country is to change, individuals must change their thinking and behaviour.

He criticised the opposition for opposing everything and claimed such opposition does not exist in any other country. He alleged that they are prepared to destroy the country merely to seize power, and that they make false allegations daily, with certain media giving prominence to such claims.

He said the opposition predicted that the government would face crisis after April and that people would take to the streets. He stated that he too is watching to see whether their expectations will come true this month. However, he insisted that the people will not protest against the government but will instead come forward to protect it.

Silva acknowledged that the Middle East conflict has affected people’s normal lives, but said the government has taken measures to manage the crisis. He stressed that no one in the government wishes to create suffering for the public while living comfortably, as this is a people’s government.

He reiterated that deliberate accusations and criticisms are being made against the government, but said they will not weaken, as they have faced such criticism for many years. He asserted that no one can bring down the government through criticism, and that the administration has been formed by uniting all communities. He promised that the government will provide solutions to the country’s fundamental problems.
