Suspicion over drug trafficking involving monks: Kassapa Thera
28-Apr-2026.
Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thera has alleged that certain political forces are attempting to undermine the discipline of Buddhist monks and push them into illegal activities such as drug trafficking.
He made these remarks at a media briefing.
He questioned whether monks arrested in connection with Kush narcotics smuggling were actually involved or were being used by trafficking networks. He called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
He also alleged that university-based student groups linked to certain political movements are influencing young monks and corrupting their discipline, leading them towards undesirable behaviour and drug addiction.
He further claimed that there may be a broader attempt to discredit Buddhist institutions and destabilise the clergy, adding that political actors could be exploiting such incidents for ulterior motives.
He stated that while legal action should be taken if wrongdoing is proven, it is also essential to identify those who may have influenced or exploited the monks.
