The Supreme Court has decided to dismiss, without taking up for hearing, a petition filed by Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader Rauff Hakeem and its General Secretary Nizam Kariapper.

The petition had sought an order directing the Election Commission to inform Parliament that the petitioners are the official members of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.

Due to various political developments and internal disagreements within the SLMC in recent times, a complicated situation had arisen regarding the party membership status of Rauff Hakeem and Nizam Kariapper. In view of this, they had requested the Court to issue an order directing the Election Commission to formally notify Parliament that they remain official party members.

After considering the submissions, the bench of judges stated that there was no sufficient legal basis to take up the petition for hearing. Accordingly, the Supreme Court ordered the dismissal of the petition without proceeding to an inquiry.
