Submit a Special Bill to Conduct Provincial Council Elections: Sajith Premadasa

.

If the government introduces a special Bill in Parliament to conduct Provincial Council elections, the opposition is prepared to extend full support, said Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

He made these remarks during the committee-stage debate on the budget allocations for the Ministries of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, and Industries on November 19.

He added:

The government promised to conduct Provincial Council elections within one year of assuming office. Now, it is citing various excuses and postponing them.

If the government is genuinely committed to holding the election, there is no need for committees or other delaying tactics. It should simply bring an urgent Bill to Parliament to conduct the election under the previous system. The entire opposition is ready to support it. The government must stop offering excuses and take action.

Local authorities are facing numerous problems. The government has instructed that 20% of their recurrent expenditure be allocated from salary payments. Ask your local council chairpersons whether this is feasible. The government plans to increase this to 40% next year and 60% the following year. This will cripple all local authorities.

Several local councils led by the opposition are facing administrative obstruction. The Minister must intervene. Local councils provide essential services closest to the people, and their functions should not be undermined.

Therefore, I request the Minister to convene a meeting in Parliament with local council heads to address and resolve their issues.
