The Government has announced that the State of Emergency imposed following the Tithva disaster will not be extended beyond this month.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Nalinda Jayatissa made the announcement during the weekly post-Cabinet media briefing held on July 1.

He said that after the cyclone, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held discussions with the Opposition Leader and other opposition representatives, following which the State of Emergency was declared.

However, the Government has now decided not to extend the emergency regulations.

The Minister said that some groups had attempted to create fear among the public by claiming that the Government would misuse the emergency laws.

He maintained that the regulations were introduced solely to facilitate reconstruction and rehabilitation work after the disaster.

Jayatissa added that the Government had honoured its assurance that the emergency regulations would not adversely affect citizens, the media or journalists.
