Sri Lanka pledges full cooperation with UN peacekeeping operations, says Minister Vijitha Herath

Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath has assured United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix that Sri Lanka is prepared to extend constructive cooperation to initiatives aimed at ensuring and promoting global peace, security and stability.

He noted that Sri Lanka had been contributing to United Nations peacekeeping operations for a long time.

Minister Herath made these remarks while addressing a high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He subsequently held bilateral meetings with several high-level representatives.

During a meeting with Nepal's Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, Minister Herath discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, including joint efforts to address the challenges posed by climate change.

He also expressed concern over the devastation caused in Nepal by recent floods.

Subsequently, during his meeting with Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Minister Herath reiterated that Sri Lanka, as a longstanding contributor to UN peacekeeping operations, was ready to provide constructive support for initiatives aimed at ensuring and promoting global peace, security and stability.

During a separate meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister Herath stressed that conflicts should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomatic engagement. He called for continued discussions to restore regional stability.
