Sri Lanka–India challenges discussed

Discussions were held on the challenges facing Sri Lanka and India amid the growing global crises and on possible joint initiatives that the two countries could undertake in the future. Opportunities for Indian investment in Sri Lanka and ways to further strengthen cultural ties between the two countries were also discussed.
A delegation led by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva, who is currently visiting India, met Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar on October 2, 2026, for cordial discussions.
Recalling their previous meeting in February, the two sides held detailed discussions on the steady development of relations between Sri Lanka and India, noting that bilateral ties were growing stronger.
Particular attention was given to how technological advancement could contribute to a country's development. The discussions also highlighted the importance of political parties maintaining close and continuous engagement with the public, particularly young people, identifying the problems faced by citizens and providing timely solutions.
The importance of sharing experiences and knowledge between the two countries, as well as between their respective political parties, was also emphasised as a means of achieving these objectives. The participants exchanged views on the efforts made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to maintain close engagement with the public.
The meeting also addressed the challenges confronting both countries amid increasing global crises and possible areas of future cooperation. Opportunities for Indian investment in Sri Lanka and measures to strengthen cultural relations between the two countries were discussed as well.
