Sri Lanka Expects Greater Cooperation from ‘Elder Brother’ India: Defence Secretary
26-Mar-2026.
Sri Lanka expects enhanced cooperation from India, its neighbouring country and “elder brother,” particularly in the defence sector, Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Sampath Thuyacontha said.
Speaking as Chief Guest at the India–Sri Lanka Defence Seminar held in Colombo on March 25, he commended the longstanding defence cooperation between the two countries.
He noted that Sri Lanka looks forward to further knowledge-sharing and benefits from India in defence matters.
Referring to global crises and conflict situations, particularly in the Middle East, he warned of possible shortages in essential supplies, including energy. In such a context, support from neighbouring countries like India is crucial.
He stressed the need for reliable and advanced defence technologies to modernise Sri Lanka’s armed forces and maintain readiness, adding that India’s defence sector could play a significant role.
The seminar, he said, should go beyond exhibition and open pathways for technology transfer, training, and joint initiatives, thereby strengthening national security and bilateral relations.
He also expressed appreciation to the Indian High Commission for organising the third edition of the seminar and urged participants to engage in constructive dialogue for future cooperation.
