Ananthi Sasitharan emphasized that merely extending the Sri Lanka Accountability Action Plan without enhancement would fail to collect sufficient evidence regarding war crimes, crimes against humanity, and human rights violations, particularly concerning genocide and genocidal intent.

Speaking at a side event of the UN Human Rights Council’s 60th session, she urged immediate action against acts of genocide targeting Tamils in Sri Lanka.

She called for an independent international investigative mechanism with full judicial authority to gather necessary evidence to ensure international justice.

She recounted her personal experience, highlighting that her husband went missing at the end of the war despite surrendering to the Sri Lankan army.

Even after 16 years, she continues to wait for truth and justice while ongoing militarization and sexual violence against women undermine trust in domestic mechanisms.
