Speaker (Dr.) Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena certified the Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Bill on October 30.

The Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Bill was passed with amendments after its third reading in Parliament on October 21.

This Bill amends the Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022. It was gazetted on 27 March 2025 and presented to Parliament on 8 May 2025 by the Minister of Digital Economy, introducing amendments required for implementing the principal Act.

Accordingly, this Bill amends Sections 1, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 52, 53, 56 and the Sixth Schedule of the principal Act, replaces Section 26, and inserts a new Section 51A.

The Act will enable preparedness for future data-related developments, emphasize the importance of having an implementing authority, provide equal support for both the public and private sectors in adopting digital strategies, and strengthen the meaningful exercise of data-subject rights.

Thus, the Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Act, No. 22 of 2025, will come into effect accordingly.
