Seven Sri Lankan drug traffickers based in the Middle East have agreed to surrender to Sri Lankan police, said Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala.
Speaking to the media after the all-island action-plan meeting held at the Colombo District Secretariat on November 9, he said:
Strict measures have been initiated to eliminate drugs. Nationwide operations will continue. People now understand the need to remove drug use from society.
Steps have been taken to dismantle drug networks. Seven Sri Lankans heading networks in the Middle East have agreed to surrender to Sri Lankan police.
Political parties should support the anti-drug effort regardless of affiliation. The drug trade and the underworld operate together; dismantling drug networks will help control underworld groups.
The all-island action plan focuses on the younger generation. This plan will be implemented in all districts, and public cooperation is essential, he said.
