The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the further remand of former State Minister Sashindra Rajapaksa until August 29 in connection with corruption charges.

Rajapaksa, produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on August 26, had been arrested by the Bribery Commission on August 6 over allegations of corruption and misappropriation of property belonging to the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka.

He is accused of illegally constructing a farm building on Mahaweli Authority land near the Giribbanwewa Reservoir in Sewanagala.

Following the destruction of this building during the “Aragalaya” protests of May 09, 2022, it was later confirmed that the land belonged to the Mahaweli Authority.

However, it is alleged that Rajapaksa exerted undue influence on officials to obtain approval for the reconstruction of the building, thereby abusing his office.

The Bribery Commission stated that these actions constituted corruption, conspiracy, and unlawful occupation of state property, leading to his arrest.

Upon hearing the case, the Magistrate ordered that Rajapaksa be further remanded until August 29.
