Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that Sri Lanka must once again rise as a nation through the unity, mutual cooperation, and humanitarian spirit shown by Sri Lankans who stood together beyond differences of ethnicity, religion, and language in the aftermath of Cyclone.

In his Christmas message, he further said:

As we look ahead to Christmas 2026, we do so with memories of the profound and painful experiences our nation faced following Cyclone, which severely affected Sri Lanka. As a result of the disaster, we lost lives, property, livelihoods, and hopes of our own people in our own country. Above all else, the tears and suffering of those who lost everything remain deeply etched in our hearts.

Christmas, which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, can be described as a time when hope is born amid destruction. It marks the dawn of an era where goodness overcomes evil. Even in the darkest nights, a light is born. That light is the light of hope.

At this moment, what we need is not politics based on division, but politics that responds to people’s suffering, builds the future of the nation, and creates a just and compassionate country. As a nation, we will face major challenges in the future. Therefore, learning lessons from this disaster and collectively bearing responsibility to build a government that protects the vulnerable and does not abandon people in the face of calamities is a shared duty of us all.

Christmas 2026 reminds us not only of what we have lost, but also of what we have not lost, namely compassion for one another, togetherness, and faith in hope for tomorrow. With that faith, I firmly believe Sri Lanka can once again rise as a strong, just, and humane nation.

I pray that this Christmas will bring peace, prosperity, harmony, unity, and renewed hope to Sri Lankan Christians around the world and to all citizens. Merry Christmas to all.
