Minister Bimal Ratnayake has instructed officials to obtain immediate legal advice and review procedures relating to disciplinary action against suspended drivers.

The directive followed confirmation at the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Transport, Highways and Urban Development that some suspended drivers continue to receive salaries.

Officials informed the committee that approximately 400 to 500 drivers had been suspended due to various disciplinary issues.

They explained that legal procedures and regulatory requirements had delayed the suspension of salary payments in some cases.

Officials further revealed that certain suspended drivers were currently employed as drivers in the private bus sector and earning additional income.

The committee also received the final report of a subcommittee tasked with strengthening the legal framework governing the transport sector, as well as an interim report aimed at improving the efficiency and service standards of the Railway Department.
