Rauff Hakeem Condemns Sri Lanka’s Position on Iran; Expresses Condolences Over Leader’s Death

Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and Member of Parliament Rauff Hakeem has described the recent attack on Iran by the United States and Israel as “brutal and one-sided,” expressing deep concern over the developments.
In a statement, Hakeem said Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several senior security officials had been killed. He described the attack as shocking and said it was carried out irresponsibly and in complete violation of international law by the United States and Israel.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Iran, stating that they are grieving the loss of a respected leader. Hakeem noted that Iran had been making clear efforts to reduce regional tensions through negotiations with the United States.
He also criticized the Sri Lankan government’s statement regarding both the US-Israeli military attacks and Iran’s retaliatory actions against American bases in the region. He said the government’s statement was disappointing because it failed to acknowledge Iran’s losses or its long-standing friendly relationship with Sri Lanka.
According to Hakeem, the wording of the government’s statement appeared to accept the circumstances surrounding the death of Iran’s leader, rather than condemning the act or offering condolences. He said that despite claiming to follow a non-aligned and neutral foreign policy, the government has shown a pattern of aligning with US-Israeli positions, including in matters related to Gaza.
He further stated that official comments made by the government since taking office regarding Israel’s war in Gaza and issues affecting Iran’s sovereignty, security, and independence are unacceptable.
As a responsible political party, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress strongly condemns what it described as unlawful military aggression by the United States and Israel and the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader.
