Rainy weather to continue for several days

The rainy weather currently prevailing in the country is expected to continue for the next few days. As the wet weather persists and landslide warnings have been issued, the Disaster Management Centre has advised the public to remain vigilant.

Showers, at times, were expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.

As the rainy weather is likely to continue in several parts of the country for the next few days, the initial yellow-level warnings issued for the districts of Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Matara, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura have been extended.

Meanwhile, the red-level landslide warnings issued for the Udapalatha, Pasbage Korale, Doluwa and Ganga Ihala Korale Divisional Secretariat divisions in Kandy District, and the Kotmale East, Ambagamuwa, Kotmale North and Norwood Divisional Secretariat divisions in Nuwara Eliya District, have also been extended.

Winds around the country are expected to blow from the south-west at speeds of 30-40 kmph.

In the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai through Mannar to Puttalam, and in the sea areas off the coast extending from Matara through Hambantota to Pottuvil, wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50-60 kmph.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai through Mannar to Puttalam, and those extending from Matara through Hambantota to Pottuvil, are expected to be moderately rough at times.

In the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam through Colombo, Galle and Matara to Pottuvil, waves may rise to heights of 2.0-2.5 metres. During thundershowers, strong winds may occur intermittently in the sea areas, causing them to become very rough.
