Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya Meets Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

During her official visit to India, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on October 17.

The discussions focused on education reforms, development priorities, and ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. Prime Minister Modi warmly welcomed his Sri Lankan counterpart and commended her visit as one that would invigorate bilateral relations and multifaceted partnership between the two nations.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya shared with him her emotional and inspiring visit to her alma mater, Hindu College, University of Delhi, where she had studied in the early 1990s as an ICCR scholar. She also briefed him on her visit to a model school in Delhi, describing it as a meaningful opportunity to observe innovative educational practices.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his support for Sri Lanka’s education reform program, while Prime Minister Amarasuriya spoke of Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to build an inclusive and equitable education system, addressing the challenges faced by youth—especially male students and school dropouts.

The two leaders also discussed issues concerning the welfare of fishermen in both countries. Prime Minister Amarasuriya stressed the importance of ensuring the livelihood and safety of fishermen on both sides.

Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to collaborative work in the shared journey of development, and reiterated India’s support for Sri Lanka’s digital ID initiative and digital governance enhancement. He also reaffirmed India’s continued assistance for the development of the Sacred City Complex in Anuradhapura.

On the occasion of the Diwali festival, Prime Minister Amarasuriya conveyed the warm greetings of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to Prime Minister Modi.
