President’s Remarks Have Been Disappointing: Sri Neth
23-May-2026.
Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi MP Ilayathambi Sri Neth stated that the President, during his visit to Batticaloa District, failed to address issues relating to a political solution, Provincial Councils, or justice for Tamil people, causing disappointment among the Tamil community.
He made these remarks during the Parliamentary debate on the Import and Export (Control) Act regulations on 21 May.
He further stated:
“Last week, Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day was observed by Tamil people. Although there was comparatively more leniency this year than under previous governments, pressure and restrictions were still visible in many places.
Justice has still not been delivered for those killed at Mullivaikkal. No meaningful initiatives have been taken towards addressing the political grievances that led to the conflict. The Government must take these matters seriously.
During his visit to Batticaloa, the President approved several development projects, which we welcome. However, he did not speak about a political solution, Provincial Councils, or justice, which has disappointed Tamil people.
Economic stabilisation is necessary for the country. But due to the war, Tamil people were unable to fully participate in economic activities for many years because of political instability. This Government bears a major responsibility to address these issues. Yet it appears to be ignoring the longstanding problems faced by Tamil people,” he said.
