President Anura Kumara Dissanayake called on all citizens to face the painful realities of life, overcome challenges, unite as a nation, and rise again, while wishing everyone a Christmas filled with peace, joy, humanity, empathy, and compassion.

In his Christmas message, he further stated:

Christians around the world are today joyfully celebrating Christmas, the day marking the birth of Jesus Christ. As Sri Lankans, we celebrate this Christmas at a moment when, as a nation, we are recovering with resilience after facing a deeply painful natural disaster.

Love, peace, joy, sharing, and sacrifice are the true meanings of Christmas. Chief among them is extending brotherly support to those affected and dedicating ourselves to the liberation of humanity.

The people of this country have repeatedly demonstrated, during the recent disaster, the noble human quality taught by all religions including Christianity, of embracing neighbours with fraternity during times of hardship, along with unshakable determination.

I believe that it is because our people truly understood the meaning of Christmas, which calls for building a society rooted in peace, harmony, sacrifice, and compassion, that they carried essential supplies for their fellow citizens even along roads they never expected to travel.

For darkness to be dispelled, the brightness of light must spread. Christianity teaches that Jesus, born in a humble stable in Bethlehem, who sacrificed himself on the cross at Calvary to redeem humanity from sin, overcame death and rose again with strength, hope, and wisdom.
