Patients across the country faced severe inconvenience due to a nationwide strike launched by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) on January 23 from 8.00 a.m., demanding solutions to salary-related and other grievances.

In many major hospitals, only emergency services were operational, while outpatient and other routine services were suspended, leaving large numbers of patients stranded.

However, strike action was not carried out at children’s hospitals, maternity hospitals, cancer treatment units, renal care units, tri-forces hospitals, and the National Institute of Mental Health in Angoda.

The GMOA stated that the strike would continue as planned unless satisfactory responses are received and held the government and the Minister of Health responsible for the inconvenience caused to the public.
